Planning a Painting Project in Humboldt

A painting project is easier to discuss when you have a clear picture of what you want to change. You do not need every colour selected before requesting an estimate. A few notes, useful photos and the right questions can help you understand the proposed work.

Start with the spaces and surfaces

List each room or exterior area you want considered. Separate walls, ceilings, baseboards, doors, cabinets and other surfaces instead of assuming that everything in a room is included. For a deck or fence, describe the existing finish as best you can.

Take an overall photo of each area, then closer photos of visible wear or damage. If you know when it was last painted or which product was used, include that information.

Ask about preparation

The estimate should explain more than the colour going on the wall. Ask which preparation is included and whether any areas need a separate discussion before painting.

  • Which surfaces will be cleaned, sanded or primed?

  • Are the visible repairs included in the quoted work?

  • What happens if an additional issue is discovered?

These questions help you compare the actual scope when considering estimates.

Think about colour and sheen together

Collect a few colour references and note what will stay in the space: flooring, cabinets, furniture or exterior features. Look at colour samples in the room where they will be used, at different times of day.

Discuss sheen alongside colour. Ask which finish is proposed for each surface, and make sure the final selections are recorded before the work begins.

Share timing and access details

Include your preferred timing and any dates that matter, such as a move or another planned project. Explain whether the property will be occupied and how access can be arranged.

Ask who will move furniture, remove wall decorations and clear the work areas. Discuss arrangements for pets and which parts of the property need to remain accessible.

Confirm what the estimate includes

Before accepting, read through the scope and ask about anything unclear:

  • The areas, surfaces and preparation included.

  • The paint or stain, finish and proposed number of coats.

  • Materials, protection, cleanup and any separately priced items.

  • The proposed schedule, payment terms and how changes are agreed.

Keep a copy of the agreed details so everyone can refer to the same plan.
